With the advent of high-speed networks and equipment that can guarantee Quality of Service (QoS), it has become possible to leverage your investments in a data network to also carry voice traffic. As a result, within your environment you can greatly reduce your telephone maintenance costs associated with move, adds, and changes as well as eliminate the need to install and maintain two separate cabling systems. Practical IP Telephony solutions have been around since the late 1990s so there are a number of proven products available in the marketplace today - both commercial and open source. As with many IT technologies, international standards exist and have been embraced by some IP Telephony solutions, particularly in the open source community. This allows organizations the flexibility to select components for their IP Telephony system from a number of different providers. Most telephone and network equipment vendors have 'extended' the standards with additional features that are proprietary to their equipment. Depending upon the particular vendor, to obtain these features you will sacrifice or sometimes even forfeit the ability to use equipment from other vendors within your IP Telephony environment. Each customer situation is different so one approach is not necessarily better than the other.
